John’s research is recognized internationally. Current work includes studies of sport and identities in all three nations of Great Britain. He has presented at conferences in numerous nations (inter alia Canada, Cyprus, Germany, Ireland, Lebanon, Norway, USA).

Education

Teaching

Worked with a number of different student groups and supervised doctoral students. Led the creation and development of new degree courses including one of the leading football education programmes in the UK.

Leadership

Significant experience as part of a Senior Management Group within a large business school. Strategic lead for research addressing the societal challenge of inclusive societies framed around the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

Engagement

Various work on bringing stakeholders together from academia, business and sport. Hosted and organised events, facilitated work experience opportunities and developed collaboration across different sectors.

Sport

Coaching

I have a lifelong interest in coaching and have learned from leading coaches in a number of different sports in the UK and USA. Extensive volunteer experience leading teams and groups of coaches in varied environments including university and community sport clubs.

Governance

I have taught classes in Sport Governance and have experience as a board member of a national governing body. Ongoing research includes work focusing on cultural politics and national sport organizations.

Consultancy

Consultancy work has included customer service audits, evaluation of a national sport scheme, business development and community collaboration. Worked as part of teams undertaking commissioned research and collaboration through Knowledge Transfer Partnerships.
